There’s a host of fabulous restaurants, pubs and cafés to suit all tastes

If there’s one thing our little town knows how to do, it’s tantalise taste buds! From fusion cuisine and awesome pub grub to gourmet wood-fired pizzas prepared in a world-class food truck, Hoedspruit has become a budding foodie destination of note!

You’re never going to go hungry or get bored when it comes to eating out in Hoedspruit. With some truly top-notch places where you can tuck into delicious dishes prepared with no small amount of flare and flavour, this dyed in the wool safari town is fast becoming a food lover’s paradise.

From a selection of excellent coffee shops and cafés offering everything from breakfast, brunch and elevenses to lunch and afternoon tea to restaurants offering fine dining and modern takes on old classics and fab food truck fare, there’s something to suit even the most discerning palate. If you don’t do meat or prefer a plant-based diet, the majority offer mouthwatering selections to meet your needs as well.

Cafés and Coffee Shops

Hoedspruit is blessed with a great selection of lovely places to go for a bite to eat and a great cuppa Joe, complemented by lots of cakes and sweet goodies too.

There’s the Fig and Bean in the Rock Fig Centre, next to the Pick n Pay supermarket complex. Renowned for its breakfasts, great coffee and smoothies it’s a Hoedspruit stalwart and busy meeting place.

At the Kamogelo Centre in the heart of town you’ll find three great options – all very different to one another.

First up is Hoedspruit Café which specialises in home baked sourdough breads and baked goods and offers an extensive menu for breakfast and lunch as well as fabulous cakes and goodies to complement tea or coffee. Topped off with a great kids’ play area, it’s a super place to go with the family.

Next up is The Stoned Olive with its mediterranean inspired menu that includes tapas, awesome coffee and great outside seating area with a wonderful, welcoming vibe, as well as delectable desserts.

The Kassava Café’s African themed menu is a fresh take on South Africa’s popular street food and traditional favourites.

Pubs and grills

Hoedspruit is renowned for its casual dining options at a selection of great pub-style venues.

Top of the list is The Thirsty Giraffe Pub and Grill which is located a few minute’s drive outside of town on the R40 to Phalaborwa. Specialising in Portuguese style fare, with the most amazing seafood platters and espetadas, the menu is filled with a range of hearty favourites like home-made pie and mash and steak and chips as well as peri peri chicken, superlative prawns and excellent gourmet burgers. It also makes the best malva pudding we know!

Hoedspruit history is combined with fab food at Sleepers – a pub and eatery that has become a legend in its own lunchtime! Housed in what used to be the Hoedspruit Station, right next to the still active railway line, it offers everything from great steaks to pizzas and themed dishes (Mexican, Indian, Thai, etc). Great for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Sleepers shares its menu with its sister eatery, Three Bridges, which is located on the Olifants River on the R40 to Phalaborwa. As its name implies, it overlooks three bridges across the river. Diners can sometimes get luck with sightings of elephant, hippo and crocodiles along the river!

The Brewery at the Bosveld Centre is another great option for informal, pub-style dining. With sourdough pizzas, a range of burgers, hot dogs and wraps on offer, there’s also excellent local craft beer and craft gins on tap to complement your meal.

Restaurants

In the very centre of town is the Hat & Creek restaurant – its name derived from the name “Hoedspruit” which when translated from the Afrikaans vernacular means “hat creek”! It’s the town’s best-loved fine dining option with a menu that features a range of wonderful fusion dishes inspired by Africa, Asia and Europe. With elegant seating indoors and out and a great, tranquil atmosphere, it also has a fabulous selection of cakes and delicious desserts.

One of Hoedspruit’s newest restaurants is helping to set it apart when it comes to the town’s status as a foodie destination. The Hogfather Porkery, as its name implies, specialises in superlative pork and pork-based dishes, lovingly created by a team of skilled chefs. Add to this wonderfully fresh takes on things like fish and chip Fridays, slap-up brunches and a truly awesome cocktail selection and you have a great reason to spend time there!

When you come and stay with us at Ekhaya Bush Villa we encourage you to get out and about in our own “back yard” – Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate.

Exploring our beautiful home is an absolute must for our guests. Because we don’t have the Big Five (with the exception of leopard, which occur naturally on the estate) it’s safe to walk around during the day, or hire a mountain bike and explore on two wheels.

You’ll often see giraffe and other plains game in our beautiful green belt – a wilderness area set aside for wildlife criss-crossed by hiking and biking trails and a network of dirt roads for game drives. So don’t forget to bring your walking shoes with you!

When you’re out exploring, or for that matter sitting by the pool with a large gin and tonic in your hand, you’re sure to hear the “clarion call” of the crested francolin, which usually rings out in the mornings and early evenings.

It’s a big sound generated by one of our most underrated birds here in the Greater Kruger region. Often overlooked, the crested francolin is usually found in pairs or small groups foraging in the undergrowth for bulbs, seeds, berries and insects. Although it can fly, it prefers to run for cover in dense vegetation when threatened.

We encourage guests to bring a pair of binoculars with them because our birdlife here is phenomenal, and we’re always keen to help them get hooked on birding!

If you’re worried that relaxing in the African sunshine here at eKhaya Bush Villa may not be enough to keep you enthralled, there’s no need to be concerned – we’ve got a range of incredible activities lined up that are sure to make your safari one to remember and make each day truly special in the process.

To start with we offer amazing game drives in local Big Five reserves. These take place either in the early morning or afternoon, or, if you are up for it, you can go for a full-day safari in the legendary Kruger National Park. The thrill of a game drive in an open vehicle is beyond compare so it’s the leading activity we offer and an absolute must during your stay with us.

Then there’s a full-day tour of the breathtakingly beautiful Panorama Route, taking in the sights such as the magnificent Blyde River Canyon, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, Graskop Gorge Lift and God’s Window.

In and around Hoedspruit itself we have some wonderful wildlife sanctuaries such as the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre and the Kinyonga Reptile Centre, both of which offer tours to visitors.

There’s also the fabulous Nyani Cultural Village where guests can learn about the fascinating cultures and traditions of local Limpopo tribes like the Shangaan, Venda and Tsonga.

You can take a flip in a helicopter, microlight, abseil, gorge swing, hike and cycle your way around the area. And here on the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate you can go horseriding in the African bush, spotting a variety of plains game and amazing birds as you go.

Taking a walk through Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, home of eKhaya Bush Villa, is one of the best things about staying with us! The estate is home to a variety of wildlife and amazing bird species, so there’s always something interesting to see on your way.

The entire central section of the estate is designated as a green belt and has been left as a wilderness area, with its own network of roads, hiking and mountain bike trails. And because we don’t have elephant, buffalo, rhino or lion, this means you can explore to your heart’s content, either on four wheels, two or even on four legs – African Dream Horse Safaris are based on the estate and offer outrides.

We encourage all of our guests to take some time out of their schedules to explore their own “back yard” and can even organise a packed lunch and a few drinks so that they can stop alongside one of our dams and have a picnic in paradise!

It pays to bring a pair of binoculars with you when you visit, because the birdlife on the estate is particularly spectacular… You can spot fish eagles and other large birds of prey as well as the smaller, more colourful species, from hornbills to woodpeckers, guineafowl to barbets and francolins to orioles.

We’ve got lots of reference books on hand to help you identify what you spot, so all you have to do is make sure your eyes are open and ready to find amazing things.

You’ll also see lots of game on your walks, from our lovely little grey duikers and warthogs to impala and kudu. We’ve got a healthy population of giraffe as well, and lots of zebra, waterbuck and wildebeest too, and all quite literally on the doorstep!

Summer is in full swing on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate

Summer is in full swing on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, home of eKhaya Bush Villa.

The Christmas season and new year brought with it some incredible rain, which has given everyone, human and wildlife alike, some respite from the heat.

All over the estate you can hear the distinctive call of woodland kingfishers and the bush is filled with a selection of baby animals, from impala lambs and zebra foals to cute “mini me” warthog piglets. Animals time their births to coincide with the arrival of the rains so that there is plenty to eat and drink, giving their babies the best chance of survival possible.

This “green” season is a wonderful time to visit here, because everything looks so amazing, with lush, verdant vegetation competing with amazing blue skies and the air alive and vibrant with the sounds of insects, frogs and birds. It’s a far cry from the dry, dusty landscape of winter and the harsh heat that builds up before the rains and shows just how important rain is to African lifecycles and how much everything depends on it.

Game drives can be a bit more challenging because the bush is so thick, but the rewards are more than worth it, seeing the dams and waterholes full and life in all its incredible glory making the most of this season of plenty. And there’s so much to do in and around Hoedspruit, from the towering peak of Mariepskop to the endless beauty of the Kruger Park, you’ll never get bored!

Re-connect local residents to their natural heritage ...

Here at Ekhaya Bush Villa we love sharing the culture and traditions of our local people with our guests and recommend that they take the time during their stay to have some wonderful, authentic African experiences, which we are happy to arrange for them.

A morning spent at Nourish Eco Village a short drive from Hoedspruit is one of the ways to do this. Founded nine years ago, this non-profit organisation is based in the village of Sigagule where it works to re-connect local residents to their natural heritage and help them derive benefit from tourism through a range of activities both on this working farm and in the village itself.

You can take a tour of Sigagule with a local guide and meet the people who are helping to fight poaching through fighting poverty thanks to grass-roots village tourism. The walking tour gives you the opportunity to visit a local creche, sample some traditional food and even have your future read by a local sangoma (traditional healer!).

Or extend your walking tour with a traditional meal at Nourish – trying out pap, chicken, chakalaka and home-picked spinach! You can also spend a morning at Nourish helping and interacting with the children at the Nourish creche, singing songs, playing games and doing crafts, followed by a short tour of the project facilities and a traditional lunch.

We also recommend a visit to Nyani Cultural Village just outside Hoedspruit where you can take a real cultural journey through the costumes, songs and dances of the San, Shona, Venda, Tsonga, Balobedu, Pedi and Bahananawa people, as well as dances from the Swati and Zulu tribes.

This exciting experience is designed to entertain and educate and is followed by a tour of Nyani’s lovely Shangaan village where you get to interact with tribal ambassadors and find out how huts are built, how maize is ground and all of the aspects of these colourful and vibrant tribal cultures.

You can follow this up with a delicious traditional lunch. All of Nyani’s team members are local residents from the rural areas in and around nearby Acornhoek who have been trained in singing, dancing, drumming and dramatic performance.

When you come and stay at Ekhaya Bush Villa in Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate there’s something you simply have to do – and that’s spend some time in the legendary Kruger National Park! We can arrange full-day guided safaris in this iconic national park, so please do take the opportunity to go and enjoy it!

There’s nothing like a full-day safari in the Kruger National Park, experiencing the magic of this legendary game reserve from an open game-viewing vehicle with an experienced and qualified safari guide at the wheel…

This is what up-close and personal game encounters with some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife species are made of in one of the world’s most renowned and lauded national parks – making this and other game drive safaris the most sought-after activities offered to guests at Ekhaya Bush Villa.

Of course, when it comes to the Kruger Park, you’re also able to explore the it yourself driving either your own car or a rental car…

The Orpen Gate is a smooth 40-minute drive from Ekhaya and it’s always best to get to the gate as it opens in the summer months, meaning a REALLY early wake-up call and a packed breakfast!

You’ll have to get up early to beat the heat of the day and get the perfect opportunity to see animals as they begin their daily routine, just after sunrise. You may also be lucky enough to see nocturnal predators like leopards in the early mornings, before they head off to find a place to sleep and beat the heat…

You can purchase a map of the Kruger Park at the Orpen Gate and at the Orpen Camp shop, which also offers a range of snacks and drinks for the road as well as curios, clothing and gifts. From there the choice is yours with a range of great routes to choose from in one of the busiest and best game-viewing sections of the park.

There are picnic spots and rest-stops where you can get out of your vehicle and stretch your legs, enjoy an awesome view and a picnic breakfast and lunch and soak in the magic of the African wilderness. There is also Satara Camp within easy distance of the Orpen Gate, with its restaurant, shop and ablution facilities.

Our other game viewing activities take place in the mornings and afternoons on local private Big Five game reserves. Like the full-day Kruger safari, morning game drives kick-off early, with a pre-dawn wake-up and collection from Ekhaya in time for a sunrise start. We’ll send you off with a packed breakfast and a cooler box with some refreshments as well.

Afternoon drives usually depart in the late afternoon, allowing you to experience the fabled “golden hour” of afternoon light that makes for perfect photography. You’ll stop for sundowners and then spend an hour or so experiencing a “night drive” with a spotlight, allowing you to look for nocturnal animals and predators. We’ll help you pack a cooler box with whatever you’d like to take with you to drink.

It's a lovely time of year to come and visit us here in South Africa's lowveld.

Autumn is in full swing here at Ekhaya Bush Villa and the bush is beginning to get dry again, in spite of late rains. All of the lush green grass of summer is gone, meaning that you are able to see further in the bush around the villa and along the roads around us.

It’s a lovely time of year to come and visit us here in South Africa’s lowveld, with the days becoming cooler and the mornings and evenings crisp and clear.

Out on our game drives in the Kruger National Park and in the surrounding private game reserves that make up the Greater Kruger region the viewing is becoming easier thanks to the bush thinning out and the lack of water means that waterholes become hot spots. You’ll need additional layers on your game drives now, so don’t forget to bring a jacket or fleece!

Here at our lovely little villa we’re gearing up for the cooler mornings and evenings, with log fires in our boma offering the perfect way to stay warm and experience the wonder of African nights out under the stars, with blankets and, of course, a good pre-dinner drink.

We’ll be putting some nice, warming dishes together for our autumn and winter menus so that if you decide to have lunch and dinner with us you’ll be able to sample our wonderful home-cooked meals, lovingly prepared by Reginah and Isobel.

And at the end of the day, full and happy, you’ll be able to slip between our wonderful cotton sheets and snuggle under our beautiful down duvets for a wonderful nights’ sleep to the inimitable sounds of the African bush.

One of the best things about visiting Ekhaya Bush Villa on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate is the freedom your stay gives you to explore this little piece of African paradise, which has its own wonderful green belt wilderness area at its heart. This is home to a variety of African wildlife species – the most iconic of which by far is the graceful giraffe!

Standing some 5m tall when they are full-grown, there’s lots to love about giraffe, with their super-long legs, elegant necks and wonderfully patterned coats.

Like all mammals (humans included) giraffes have only seven vertebrae in their necks – the difference is that each of those vertebrae is around 28cm long! Their long prehensile tongues manage to wrap around the branches of acacia trees and strip off leaves while avoiding thorns – a very clever trick when you look at just how many thorns these trees have!

Sadly, giraffe are under threat across Africa. During the last 30 years their numbers have fallen by 40% and a few of the various subspecies are now critically endangered. But here on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate they have a safe haven, and can be seen regularly in towers (the collective noun for a group of giraffe standing still) as they feed from the tops of the trees and in journeys (the collective for a group of giraffe on the move) as they move from one area to another.

You are welcome to explore the estate on foot or can hire a mountain bike and explore the various cycle paths and routes that criss-cross it. Or we can arrange for you to explore on horseback – African Dream Horse Safaris are based on the estate and have regular outrides into the wilderness area.

Think of our amazing location in the heart of the Greater Kruger...

We’re waving a sad farewell to the end of another season of plenty as the dry season begins to get its grip on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, home of Ekhaya Bush Villa.

The lush greens of what’s been an amazing, long and bountiful summer are finally fading to brown and the trees and shrubs are losing their leaves en masse… The grasses are waving their last goodbyes as the final winds of autumn blow through, there’s an early morning chill to the air and the evenings are growing cold and drawing in early…

Thanks to late rains, there has been enough food for our wildlife to ensure they are in prime condition going into winter, when the pickings will be a lot slimmer and the hunt for something tasty to eat becomes a daily grind. It’s also getting very dry as the humidity levels drop and the ground becomes more parched.

We’ve recently welcomed a new baby giraffe to the estate, born just as autumn had its last gasp with a couple of (very) late rain showers. It’s always lovely to see our wildlife carrying on with their lives as we poor humans deal with the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic!

With South Africa’s phased exit from lockdown in full swing we’re beginning to make plans for re-opening and hope it’s not going to be too much longer before we get to welcome our first guests again. And those first guests will be local, as domestic tourism’s wheels will start moving and getting us all back into the swing of things before our borders open to international arrivals once more.

So keep us in mind, fellow South Africans, when you are able to travel once more. Think of our amazing location in the heart of the Greater Kruger, with the Kruger Park and a host of private game reserves on our doorstep. And think of our beautiful, warm winter sunshine and amazing wildlife.

Getting an early start beats the heat of the day and gives you the perfect opportunity to see animals as they begin their daily routine, just after sunrise. Take to the skies over Hoedspruit for the experience of a lifetime on a helicopter flight into the Blyde River Canyon and beyond, exploring the spectacular hidden world on top of the Northern Drakensberg Escarpment from the air…

Taking off from Hoedspruit Civil airport in the centre of this vibrant little safari town is exciting in its own right, gaining altitude quickly as you swoop over the African bush that surrounds this Greater Kruger National Park hub.

At the helm is local pilot and conservation warrior Jana Meyer of Hope for African Wildlife – an aviation company that also contributes its time and effort to helping protect endangered species like rhino in the game reserves that make this region of South Africa so popular with tourists.

The helicopter is small, seating just three passengers, but it affords incredible views of the pristine wilderness this area is renowned for. Spotting wildlife from the air is easy as the helicopter soars over the bush – rhino, giraffe, elephant… All are ticked off on the way to the mountains that soar on the western skyline.

As you get closer to the dramatic peaks you fly over the small, inconspicuous airstrip that was used by Tom Cruise and his production team for the filming of the Hollywood movie Mission: Impossible 8 – the last in this popular film franchise. Cruise and Co stayed in Hoedspruit for almost three months at the beginning of 2022 to film aerial combat sequences in and around the canyon.

Following in Cruise’s footsteps – or flightpath – the world’s third largest green canyon comes into view as the helicopter begins to climb over the Blyde Dam with the magnificent Three Rondavels towering over it. A boat cruising the dam looks tiny from above as hippo are spotted, as well as kudu on the dam’s grassy banks.

The tufa waterfall disappears beneath as the chopper weaves along the Blyde River, banking left to follow the Belvedere River and the old power station that once supplied Pilgrim’s Rest with hydro electricity.

It’s fascinating to see the pristine, untouched wilderness that human feet are not able to reach – wide grassy plains fringed by dense trees intersected by a myriad rivers and streams all eventually feeding into the Blyde – the water lifeline of Hoedspruit and its surrounds. This is home to mountain reedbuck, which are spotted from above, along with duiker, bushbuck and more kudu.

Aloes and a selection of wonderful endemic plant species proliferate on top of the escarpment, along with inaccessible sections of thick, riparian forest with a dense canopy of tall branches, all of which enjoy the frequent cloud cover and mist that produces regular rain and moisture to feed into the streams and rivers. It’s a veritable Eden.

The undulating top of the escarpment quickly gives way to a dramatic drop off, to squeals of delight as the chopper plunges over the edge, offering amazing views of the cliffs as it does so. Next up is the Klaserie Dam, via a brief fly over of Acornhoek and its surrounds. The dam glitters like a huge jewel in the Greater Kruger’s crown. A popular weekend haunt, it’s renowned for its fishing and as a boating spot.

Soon the helicopter is flying over Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate – home of Ekhaya Bush Villa – and it’s amazing to see your home-from-home in the Greater Kruger from the air! A final pass over Hoedspruit and it’s time to land back at Hoedspruit civil airport, with amazing videos and photos and a lifetime memory in hand.

We’ve always loved our food here at Ekhaya Bush Villa, and coming up with fresh dishes and stunning presentations is very much part of our DNA! We may be a relatively small, boutique bush villa but we’re not afraid to go large when it comes to serving up a storm at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

So when renowned local food photographer Brent Abrahamse came to take pictures of our scrumptious menu items, we jumped at the opportunity to “wow” everyone…

Our chefs pulled out all of the stops, aided and abetted by our manager, Clare Wilkie-Girardin, and created a range of amazing dishes that Brent photographed. We cooked up a storm – from delicious home-made tomato soup, crisp, fresh salads and fruit platters to mouth-watering curry, oriental stir-fry, grilled steak and to-die-for desserts. And Brent snapped away, capturing our labour of culinary love with his camera so that we can share these wonderful images with our guests.

“The pictures are incredible,” says Clare. “And they capture the absolute passion our team has for cooking with fresh, local ingredients, creating fabulous meals for our guests to enjoy,” she adds. “If these images don’t make you hungry, nothing will,” she laughs!

So you have no worry about going hungry at Ekhaya – at the very least you’ll be more concerned with plumping up during your stay! But never fear – there’s always a good, long walk or two on the gorgeous Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate to help work up an appetite and stay trim…

Enjoy the thrill of being in the Greater Kruger...

Here at Ekhaya Bush Villa there’s occasionally a bit of monkey business going on. Our manager is regularly on patrol making sure our little furry cousins are not up to no good.

Yes, we’re talking about our resident troop of vervet monkeys, whose cheeky antics and love of play are a delight to behold but sometimes somewhat troublesome. Although they’re cute to look at and incredibly endearing, vervets are also fond of stealing our fruit and any other tempting treat they can lay their hands on from the kitchen, so we have to be constantly alert when they are around!

Thankfully, vervets go to bed at sunset, choosing nice trees to roost in, leaving us to enjoy the magic of Ekhaya by night! There’s something wonderful and other-wordly about our gorgeous bush villa all lit up, surrounded by the African night and all its cacophany of sounds.

It looks marvelously inviting and cozy, and now that winter is just around the corner and the evenings are growing colder, it’s lovely to have a drink around a blazing fire and just enjoy the thrill of being in the Greater Kruger, listening to the crickets and gazing at the stars, while looking forward to an amazing bush dinner!

So much to see and do on your Greater Kruger adventure

Getting away from it all is made easy at Ekhaya Bush Villa in the heart of South Africa’s Greater Kruger region. For a start we are based on the beautiful Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate which is a wilderness in its own right and home to a rich variety of game, including several local leopards!

Hoedspruit itself is the safari capital of South Africa and there’s a wealth of safari activities on its doorstep, offering you the chance to view the Big Five – elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard and lion – as well as a host of other amazing African wildlife species.

There’s a wealth of great tourism attractions in this beautiful corner of South Africa, so let’s have a look at some of the best things to do while you are staying at Ekhaya…

The Kruger National Park

The legendary Kruger National Park’s Orpen Gate is a short 40-minute drive from Hoedspruit, with most of the town’s surrounding private game reserves open to the park and forming the bulk of what’s now known as the Greater Kruger National Park.

There are guided day tours into the park in open safari vehicles or you can choose a self-drive option in your own vehicle, taking one of the many exciting game drive routes inside the park.

2. The Panorama Route

Take a guided tour along the Panorama route or opt to self-drive. The route is packed with exciting things to do and see from the Blyde River Canyon and the famous Three Rondavels to Bourke’s Luck Potholes – a fascinating geological anomaly formed at the confluence of the Blyde and Treur rivers where the swirling waters have carved huge circular shapes out of the sandstone rock.

End up at the wonderful Graskop Gorge Lift and plunge to the floor of a steep gorge to explore the amazing eco system you find there.

3. Eat out, Hoedspruit-style

Hoedspruit is famous for its range of wonderful restaurants, coffee shops and eateries from the legendary Sleepers and Thirsty Giraffe Pub and Grill to the Hoedspruit Café and Hat & Creek restaurant.

We also have a first-class food truck – the Yum Factory – making delicious thin-crust pizzas and the Hoedspruit Brew Co, with its great range of craft beers and spirits. Feel free to ask us for recommendations.

4. Hot Air Ballooning

Hot Air Ballooning is most certainly one of the best ways to experience the majesty of this region’s fantastic scenery. Soar over breathtaking landscapes at the foot of the Drakensberg Escarpment, which forms a natural amphitheatre, providing safe shelter from prevailing winds. Flights last approximately an hour.

5. Cruising the Blyde Dam

You’ll be blown away by the amazing views of the Blyde River Canyon from the dam on a wonderful guided cruise of this amazing body of water, where the Blyde River is temporarily halted on its journey to join the Olifants River.

The cruises, which operate from the Swadini Nature Reserve a short drive from Hoedspruit, take in the Kadishi Tufa waterfall and the magnificent Three Rondavels and allow full appreciation of this amazing “green” canyon.

6. Horse riding

Whether you’re a bird watcher, animal lover or just here for the ride, a horse back trail is the perfect way to experience the bush in its most natural form.

African Dream Horse Safaris are based on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate and offer a range of outrides on the estate along game drive routes through the bush, where a variety of wildlife can be seen.

This is a great way to experience the bush, as wild animals do not react to the horses, carrying on with their usual activities, allowing you to view them in a completely different, more relaxed and personal way.

A stay at Ekhaya Bush Villa puts you in the pound seats when it comes to experiencing what it’s like to live in the African bush… Located on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate in the heart of the thriving, vibrant little bushveld town of Hoedspruit, just five hours from Johannesburg by car (or a short, 40 minute flight with Airlink from OR Tambo International Airport to Eastgate airport), Ekhaya is surrounded by pristine wilderness that’s home to a rich diversity of wildlife.

At 700ha in size, the estate has allocated a good deal of its land to nature, with a vast wilderness area at its heart criss-crossed by hiking and mountain biking trails and game drive routes.

With three large dams -that each have their own lookout hides, as well as many other singular hides strewn across the green belt – and incredible views of the northern section of the Drakensberg escarpment.

In the estate you will see warthog, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, duiker, waterbuck and impala, as well as the occasional jackal and hyena and, if you are extremely lucky, even a leopard!

From mongoose of all descriptions (we have banded, dwarf and slender mongoose in abundance) to genets, civets and African wild cats, as well as honey badgers and the aforementioned hyena and leopard, there are carnivores aplenty on the estate.

The birdlife is off the charts with more than 170 species recorded including birds of prey like the African fish eagle, white-backed vulture, martial eagle, Bateleur and Wahlberg’s eagle to Lowveld staples like the red and yellow-billed hornbill, black-headed oriole, orange-breasted bush shrike, lilac-breasted roller and blue waxbill!

The even better news is that this amazing environment is free for you to enjoy during your stay, especially on foot, with well-marked trails available for those who would like to explore it in depth. Walking on the estate is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in nature and you can choose to do it under your own steam or we can arrange a knowledgeable guide if you prefer.

Take a backpack and lots of water, a hat, sunscreen, binoculars and your camera and spend as much or as little time out there as you prefer… In the warmer months it’s always better to walk in the early morning before the heat of the day kicks in. Alternatively, if you are self-driving, take your car and stop at one of the dams for a picnic and enjoy a moment observing the wildlife at close quarters.

Because we want you to make Ekhaya Bush Villa your home for the duration of your safari experience, we want you to treat it like your home – and that means going to the fridge or drinks station to grab whatever takes your fancy when you feel like it.

It’s a system called an “honesty bar” and allows you to relax, unwind and feel at ease, without having to call someone whenever you want to quench your thirst. All you do is write down what you’ve had and we take care of the rest.

And there’s a lot to choose from to boot! Guests are actually spoiled for choice when it comes to drinks, with a wonderfully range of delicious liqueurs and spirits including hugely popular craft gins.

Our fully stocked fridge is filled with water, beer and a selection of cool drinks and there’s a permanent tea and coffee station in the kitchen and in your bedrooms too.

If there’s something you’d like that isn’t in stock, we’re happy to try and find it for you, and we’re HUGE ambassadors of our local craft beer – Zwakala – and a range of great South African wines which we keep on hand for you to sample. We’re happy to recommend a great vintage to go with dinner or to quaff out on the stoep or under the sala…

Our kitchen also prepares a “help yourself” fresh water pitcher that’s placed in the kitchen every morning. Infused with fresh local citrus or cucumber, depending on what’s in season, it’s the perfect way to cool off on a warm afternoon around the pool.

Of course, just because you can help yourself doesn’t mean that you have to! Our staff are always on hand to prepare the drink of your choice for you, to sip poolside or in your room, if you prefer.

Summer is almost here, with just another month to go until our favourite season here at Ekhaya, when the wonderful African bush that surrounds us becomes lush and verdant and there are baby animals everywhere.

We’ve already had the first downpours of our seasonal rains and are already seeing fresh green shoots sprouting everywhere. A few of our warthogs have already had their babies and the summer migrant bird species are arriving by the day.

Of course, the prelude to summer means something else is just around the corner – Christmas! We’re gearing up for the festive season and the long, lazy Lowveld summer days when sitting by the pool with a cool, refreshing drink and a great book is the way to go!

The decor at Khaya Ndlovu is reminiscent of a bygone age, calling to mind an era of colonial charm, with a collection of original artworks in a variety of genres complementing the olde world furnishings. Accommodation comes in the form of three spacious Garden Suites, three Hardwood Suites (each named after an indigenous African hardwood) and the beautiful Honeymoon Suite.

The Garden Suites are self-contained apartments a short walk from the main Manor House, enjoying uninterrupted views over Khaya Ndlovu’s perfectly landscaped gardens, filled with indigenous plants and birds. One is a family suite offering two bedrooms.

The Hardwood Suites – the Jackalberry Room, Marula Room and Acacia Family Suite – are housed within the Manor House and have access to their own garden terraces. Morning and afternoon game drives are offered on the 1400 hectare reserve, and families can take advantage of a special guided educational adventure which includes track and sign trailing, birding and bird-ringing, bug hunts and other environmental experiences enjoyed on a 60-to-90 minute walk through the African bush.

Vuyani Safari Lodge

Located on the Moditlo Private Game Reserve a short drive outside of Hoedspruit, Vuyani Safari Lodge offers guests the chance to escape the rat race, relax, unwind and experience the calming essence of the bush.

The reserve is part of the 14,500 hectare Blue Canyon Conservancy, which lies at the foot of the Drakensberg Escarpment and offers incredible Big 5 game viewing experiences to match the dramatic scenery.

Built along the banks of a seasonal stream, the camp’s open plan dining room and lounge area are open to the surrounding bush and shaded by a canopy of giant leadwood trees.

A suspension bridge over the stream leads to the impressive chalets, each of which has its own private deck complete with plunge pool and views of the bush and the wildlife which inhabits it.

The atmosphere is one of quiet elegance, with rich woods and luxurious finishes combined with artistic flair in each of the chalets. Wooden sliding doors open to the stylish interiors where every comfort is catered for.

A short lesson in safari… For a start, let’s look at the word “safari”. It first appeared as a foreign word in the English language in the mid 1800s, thanks to explorer Sir Richard Burton, and is derived from Arabic word “safara” which means “a journey”.

Due to the trade between Arabia and East Africa, the word was absorbed into the kiSwahili vernacular where it was adapted into a verb – “kusafiri” – which means “to travel” and subsequently, the noun “safari”.

In those days to go on safari meant a journey into the wilds of the continent, in search of big game, invariably to hunt. The Big 5 – leopard, lion, buffalo, elephant and rhino – were thus named as being the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot.

Mercifully, on today’s African safari, cameras have replaced guns and modern safari goers experience the thrill of capturing images of the Big 5 and witnessing their behaviour in the wild instead of mounting their heads on a wall.

It all starts with superb game viewing activities in what is without doubt one of the best Big 5 areas on the continent. The Greater Kruger area is packed with some of South Africa’s leading private game reserves as well as the world-renowned Kruger National Park itself.

Ekhaya Bush Villa can arrange a range of guided game viewing activities in the Kruger National Park and includes a full-day game drive in all of its safari packages.

This is because there really isn’t anything to match the thrill of being in this legendary game reserve in an open safari vehicle, feeling the African wind in your face and experiencing the sights and smells of the Kruger bush at close quarters.

At just over 2-million hectares in size, or 19,485 square kilometres (that’s roughly the size of the country of Belgium!) this is one of the largest game reserves in Africa and, indeed, the world. It was South Africa’s first national park, being proclaimed in 1926 and is now part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park – a peace park linking it with neighbouring Zimbabwe’s Gonarezhou National Park and Mozambique’s Limpopo National Park. It’s also part of the Kruger to Canyon Biosphere – an area designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) as an International Man and Biosphere Reserve.

Ekhaya is ideally positioned between two of the Kruger Park’s entrance gates at Orpen and Phalaborwa, with the Orpen gate the closest and most convenient for day visitors.

Our 3-night and 5-night packages include a full-day game viewing experience in the Kruger Park, whilst our 7-night package includes two full-day trips in the park.

Trips into the Kruger Park are always exciting and guests have the chance to see a variety of animals, from the fabled Big 5 to some 477 species of birds, some of which are endemic to the area.

We send you off with a delicious packed breakfast, and guests stop for lunch at Satara Rest Camp where there is both a cafe and restaurant. In addition to the Kruger National Park, Ekhaya also offers morning and evening guided game drives on a number of private game reserves in the area, allowing guests the chance to have some amazing wildlife encounters in otherwise exclusive wilderness areas.

Journey into adventure…

Your eKhaya safari package isn’t just about game viewing… We’re also big on showing you some of the amazing places on our doorstep, which we think offers some of the best scenery and landscapes in South Africa.

The famed Panorama Route is within spitting distance of eKhaya, with the magnificent Drakensberg escarpment dominating the western horizon.

Here you will find the breathtakingly beautiful Blyde River Canyon, the third largest canyon in the world, which can be viewed from different aspects on two activities we include in our 5-night and 7-night packages – the Panorama Scenic Tour and the Sunset Boat Cruise.

The Panorama Scenic Tour takes in the Blyde Canyon from above, with visits to the Three Rondavels viewing points offering incredible views down into the canyon and of the course of the Blyde river where it has carved its way through the surrounding rock over a period of millennia.

The Panorama Route also takes in sights such as Bourke’s Luck Potholes. Named after prospector Tom Bourke, who discovered alluvial gold there during the late 1800’s, the potholes lie at the confluence of the Treur and Blyde rivers and were formed millions of years ago by sand and pebbles caught in the rivers flow, which gouged holes into the underlying sandstone.

The Blyde Canyon and Bourke’s Luck Potholes, together with the other tourism attractions of the Panorama Route, are accessed via the impressive Abel Erasmus pass – a winding road up through the escarpment, surrounded by steep mountainsides and plunging rock faces which drop down to the Olifants river at its base.

This incredible mountain pass was named after a local entrepreneur who had a mining and general transportation business at the turn of the 20th century, moving mining equipment and supplies with huge spans of oxen from the Indian Ocean port of Lourenco Marques (now Maputo, the capital of Mozambique) to local mines and the growing settlements, including Hoedspruit, which were springing up in the area.

At the base of the escarpment lies the Blyde Dam, accessed via the Swadini Reserve, where boat cruises and a range of adventure activities offer another way of viewing this magnificent scenery.

Safari packages with heart and soul…

This area is also renowned for two of South Africa’s best loved wildlife rehabilitation centres – the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre and Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre – which also feature in eKhaya’s 5 and 7-night safari packages.

Visits to these centres can also be arranged for guests at eKhaya. The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, located close to eKhaya at Kapama Game Reserve, focuses on conservation and the sustainability of rare, vulnerable and threatened species and helps to educate local communities on the importance of this.

It is renowned for its work with cheetahs, which are bred and rehabilitated back into the wild. Situated in the shadow of the majestic “ Mariepskop” – the highest peak in the Drakensberg escarpment – Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is a home to abandoned, injured and poisoned wildlife and plays a major role in wildlife education.

It has a successful Serval Breeding Project and more than 160 have successfully been reintroduced to areas where they have become extinct. It is also actively involved in research on the movement and behaviour of leopards and also on a number of vulture species that are monitored at the centre’s “vulture restaurant”.

When you visit the Greater Kruger Region, excitement is very much on par for the course, with adventure literally on your doorstep thanks to a host of exciting things to see and places to visit during your stay with us at eKhaya Bush Villa.

Of course, it wouldn’t be an African safari without a full-day guided game drive in the world famous Kruger National Park where the Big Five awaits in this beautiful, untamed African wilderness.

We recommend this incredible experience to all of our guests, waking them up before dawn, filling them with coffee and muffins and waving them off on their adventure with a scrumptious packed breakfast.

There’s nothing to compare to the thrill of being on an open game vehicle, learning all about the bush from an experienced safari guide and getting up close and personal with some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife species in its most famous national park.

We also arrange morning and evening game drives in some of the smaller, private reserves bordering the Kruger National Park, allowing guests to make the most of the amazing wilderness areas that surround us.

And there’s always the opportunity to go for a walk or drive on our beautiful “home” – the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate – where you can see a variety of wildlife including giraffe, zebra, kudu, warthog, waterbuck, impala and many other plains game. Staying at Ekhaya Bush Villa puts you in the pound seats for a spectacular safari!

One of the major drawcards of Hoedspruit is its wonderful proximity to one of Africa’s greatest game reserves – the legendary Kruger National Park. This makes eKhaya Bush Villa the perfect base from which to explore this incredible wildlife haven.

Kruger’s Orpen Gate is just a 45-minute drive away, giving you easy access to one of the most diverse and game-rich regions of the park and lots of variety for a full-day exploration. You can choose to drive yourself or arrange a full-day guided safari in an open safari vehicle with us – the choice is yours.

We recommend a guided safari as the game viewing vehicles are much higher off the ground than a normal sedan or SUV and afford you a much better view of the Kruger wilderness, especially along the Timbavati River where you often see large herds of elephant and leopard.

In spring and summer, departure is usually well before dawn, allowing you to arrive at the Orpen Gate just as it opens and make the most of the cooler, early morning temperatures that give you the chance to see predators on the move and animals in the open, before it gets too hot and everything heads for shade…

We pack a picnic breakfast for you to enjoy en-route and you will stop at various look-out points along the way to stretch your legs, as well as taking a comfort stop at both Satara Camp and dedicated picnic sites.

We can also arrange a cooler box for you packed with your favourite drinks. Sadly, no alcohol is allowed to be taken into the park on day trips.

One of the highlights of a day-trip into Kruger from the Orpen Gate is the chance to explore the fabled S100. This dirt road runs alongside the N’wanetsi River and is legendary for its high concentrations of game and spectacular predator sightings – especially lion. So have your camera handy and a good pair of binoculars!

If you choose to self-drive, maps are available for purchase at the Orpen Gate and the Orpen Camp shop, just inside the gate. You can choose to explore the area around Satara or opt to take a leisurely drive north on the tar road and its various dirt road loops to Letaba Camp, stopping there for lunch before heading back to Hoedspruit via the Phalaborwa Gate.

Just remember to get your timing right… The speed limit on the tar roads is 50km an hour, and on the dirt roads it’s 40km an hour.

This is for your own protection as well as the protection of the wildlife inside the park. No matter what speed you drive, be on the lookout for game in the road, especially smaller species like chameleons, terrapins and mongooses.

Above everything else – enjoy this incredible experience and make lots of memories along the way!

With spring in full swing and temperatures beginning to soar, we’re gearing up for summer here in the bustling little safari town of Hoedspruit, home of Ekhaya Bush Villa… It may be hot outside, but when you are staying in a really cool place like Ekhaya Bush Villa, the heat is hardly noticeable!

We’re cool figuratively and literally, with luxurious surroundings and first-class service at this wonderful home from home in the African bush. All of our en-suite guest rooms are air-conditioned, and Ekhaya is the perfect place for families and small groups of friends.

With so much to do on your doorstep, exploring the town of Hoedspruit and its surrounds and venturing into the wild of Africa on full-day safaris, Ekhaya really is one of the most special places in the Greater Kruger region.

Or you can take a leisurely walk around the estate and along the winding trails in our wilderness area to see what you can spot. We can also arrange guided bird walks if you would prefer.

The funky, contemporary take on decor at Ekhaya combines the rich organic influences of the surrounding bush with bright, colourful tribal textiles and a diversity of textures, from intricate woven basketware to beaded artefacts and trinkets.

The ideal time to take a walk on the wild side ...

Here at Ekhaya Bush Villa the days have been getting longer and warmer and the air is filled with the anticipation of spring, which is literally just around the corner.

All over Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate the knob thorns are flowering already with their distinctive yellow catkins standing out against the otherwise dry and dusty bush that will stay with us now until the rains come (hopefully around November).

The wild animals of the estate are often seen at the various dams, making this the ideal time to take a walk on the wild side and spend time in one of our hides to see what comes down to drink.

Over the next few weeks we will expect to see some of our African migrant bird species start to arrive – we’ve already seen a few yellow-billed kites patrolling our skies, so this is the perfect place for keen birders! Don’t forget your binoculars!

There’s so much to see and do in the area around Hoedspruit – it really is the ultimate base from which to explore the Greater Kruger region now that the restrictions on inter-provincial travel have been lifted.

And Ekhaya is ideal for groups of friends and families to come together and spend some quality time with one another after not seeing one another for so long during lockdown.

With the Kruger National Park just a short drive away, as well as a range of wonderful private game reserves on our doorstep, the game viewing in this region is the best in South Africa and we offer a range of options for guided game drives, from full days in the Kruger to morning and afternoon drives on nearby reserves.

With its wonderfully wild green belt criss-crossed with dirt roads, cycle and hiking paths, Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate is the perfect place to spend time exploring and as its name suggests, it’s home to a wide variety of African wildlife. So grab your camera, your binoculars and a sun hat and let’s explore this fabulous slice of African wilderness on eKhaya Bush Villa’s doorstep…

The early morning sun is filtering through the trees… The gentle hum of insects waking from their slumber fills the air, along with the calls of a myriad birds. A soft breeze moves across the gently swaying grasses and somewhere in the distance a zebra calls excitedly. The rich red earth of Africa is beneath your feet and the sights and sounds of the wilderness threaten to overpower your senses. There’s a movement on the path ahead… A giraffe emerges from the dense Lowveld acacia thicket, closely followed by another, and another, and bringing up the rear, a tiny baby…

You’d be forgiven for thinking we’re writing about the nearby Kruger National Park or an exclusive private game reserve, but no, we’re actually describing eKhaya Bush Villa’s own “back yard” – Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate. At just over 700ha, this beautiful residential paradise has been developed around an expansive “wild” area that forms its heart – hectare upon hectare of pristine African bush filled with a variety of endemic species of flora and fauna.

You’ll find most of the plains species here – the aforementioned giraffe, zebra and antelope like kudu, nyala, duiker, impala, waterbuck and wildebeest. Then there’s small carnivores like civet, genet, African wild cat, jackal and mongooses. And bigger predators like hyena and leopard are residents, with the occasional painted wolf (African wild dog) passing through.

The birdlife is prolific, especially in the summer months when the migrants are here raising their young. From Wahlberg’s eagles and European bee-eaters to woodland kingfishers, African paradise flycatchers and yellow billed kites, keen ornithologists are in for a treat. We also have the gorgeous purple-crested turaco in residence!

The best thing about Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate is that you get to explore it on your own time. Because of the absence of really dangerous game (the leopards are mostly active at night which is why we don’t recommend you walking after dark!) during the day
